Mrs. Quimby's fourth-grade gifted and talented math students at George E. Jack and Buxton Center School have been learning about ancient number systems as an enrichment project throughout the year. They decided to share what they have learned by presenting and teaching these number systems to the entire fourth-grade at each of the schools.
Throughout this project, the fourth-graders discovered the way people in ancient cultures conducted their lives and learned how these people counted and calculated. Students learned how to count like the ancient Greeks, Mayans, Babylonians, Egyptians, and Romans.
The symbols and rules regarding the use of the symbols in each number system were introduced and demonstrated with examples. This fun and engaging project helped students build an understanding of place value, number theory, and reasoning.
