Child Find Project ChildFind Procedures

Each year S.A.D.#6 makes an effort to locate and identify handicapped children who have not registered for school. Public Law 94-142 (federal) and Title 20-A, Chapters 301 and 302 (state) require specific procedures for identifying children ages 3-20. At least once a year information regarding special education services will be publicized and distributed to various local agencies.

The Director of Special Services maintains a portfolio which contains the following:

  1. Sample letters and handouts.
  2. Mailing List.
  3. Newspaper lists, sample articles.
  4. Radio Lists, sample of spot announcements.
  5. Correspondence.
  6. Referral notes.

Guidelines:

A. Prior to October Ist of each year the following activities will be instituted:

  1. A handout (brochure) will be developed and contain the following:
    • Description of Programs and Services
    • Parental Rights
    • Request to Contact School
  2. The handout brochure will be distributed to:
    • Local retailers and agencies.
    • Radio/Television stations.
    • Local nursery schools.
    • Local professionals (doctors, lawyers, etc.).
    • Local agencies providing Special Services (i.e. Northeast, Infant Dev. Ctr.).
    • All school bulletin boards.
    • District Publications - "Focus on 6".

B. All "Childfind" referrals will be submitted to the Director of Special Services.

C. All "Childfind" activities will be reported as required in the application for PL94-142 "flow through" monies by the Director of Special Services.
